Arun decision over ASDA sparks fury in Bognor Regis

Bognor Residents, civic leaders and town and local councillors were up in arms this week at the news that Arun District council are to give the go-ahead for a new ASDA supermarket in the district outside Littlehampton.

This after the protracted battle fought and lost by Bognor people to bring a similar store to our town less than a year ago. Amid furious grass roots opinion the council rejected ASDA's proposals for Bognor Regis.
Local Ward councillor Paul Wells commented " Littlehampton gets the deal, thats why Arun were so keen to turn down ASDA in Bognor Regis. remember it was the councillors from east of river that turned down our ASDA and now we know why";
Disgusted local man Ian Hacket was quoted as saying "I think it's disgusting that we're still being bullied by the idiots from east of the river. It's about time we controlled our own future! It's all well and good that we're getting a Sainsburys, but they've already got one of those, we should have had the ASDA".
Bognor CIVIC society leader and local activist Hugh Coster similarly commented "You will recall that Arun's Development Control committee, with a majority of 'east-of-the-river' councillors refused ASDA's application to build a supermarket in Bognor Regis, when ASDA were prepared- as part of the deal - to put in the infrastructure for a new business park and also build a 10,000 sq ft office block - all to create more jobs for the area. And ASDA would have brought thousands of people to the Bognor Regis area, a huge regeneration opportunity. All that - which could have been up and running by now - was lost, and the site is still vacant.
And NOW Arun is talking about compulsorily purchasing the site - with YOUR money - to do what would have been done by ASDA for free. Unbelievable incompetence";

This is disgusting. How can they have the bare faced cheek to do this after knowing how much bognor people wanted an ASDA for the town a couple of years ago. They must have known about this all along and were going behind the backs of the people of Bognor in order to secure more provisions and services for Littlehampton. Its total betrayal and needs to be stopped.
